Bishop Jones is grateful for tornado assistance

Last summer at the Holston Annual Conference, Bishop Scott Jones inspired many with his Bible studies concerning women in church leadership. Last week, the resident bishop of the Kansas Area thanked United Methodists for their support following a devastating tornado.

"We are grateful for the outpouring of prayers and financial support from our United Methodist sisters and brothers around the country," Jones said. "Our connectional church allows for God to work quickly and effectively to accomplish God's mission through us."

To support UMCOR in the tornado recovery effort, make checks to your local church, with "Kansas Tornado, Project 569" on the memo line. Volunteers in Mission Teams are also needed. Call Bev Weber at (800) 745-2350.

Ineffective but still guaranteed: Who said that?

"The greatest drain on our time and energy that keeps us from leading proactively in our mission of making disciples ... is dealing with ineffective clergy."

— Missouri Area Bishop Robert Schnase, in a May 3 task force report to the denomination's Council of Bishops. The bishops will ask the 2008 General Conference to redefine "guaranteed appointment," in which ordained elders are assigned to local churches regardless of their effectiveness.
