NBC-TV to carry United Methodist Easter service from Tennessee
GERMANTOWN, Tenn. – An Easter service of Germantown (Tenn.) United Methodist Church has been chosen to air on NBC-TV.
The hour-long service, provided by the network to all its affiliates across the country, will include a sermon by Rev. Rick Kirchoff, senior pastor of the church, located on the edge of Memphis, and Easter musical selections presented by the church's sanctuary choir and adult hand bell choir.
In Holston Conference, the service will air live Sunday, April 11, at 5 a.m.,on WCYB-TV in Bristol, Va., and WBIR-TV in Knoxville, Tenn.
United Methodists are encouraged to contact their local NBC affiliates to request that the program be aired in their areas.
Kirchoff's sermon, "Imagine a World Without Easter," includes Scripture text from 1 Corinthians 15. Choir director Jim Thrash and Eva McPeters, organist and assistant choir director, will lead the music.
The 3,000-member church, located in a Memphis suburb, has been characterized as theologically and politically diverse, and growing in racial diversity. It also has a history of commitment to inner-city revitalization.
The National Council of Churches sponsors the annual NBC Easter service, using production funds deployed through the Interfaith Broadcasting Commission. The denomination chosen for the service each year rotates among the council's member denominations.
The 3,000-member Germantown church was selected through the efforts of Memphis Annual (regional) Conference communicator Cathy Farmer and Leslie Alexander, who directs video productions at United Methodist Communications, Nashville, Tenn. Alexander received nominations from annual conference communicators, and interviewed candidates before settling on Germantown, nominated by Farmer.
