22 Endowment Ideas

An endowment is money that is given or set aside as a permanent fund to meet special, designated or emergency needs not met through current income. An endowment is meant to last in perpetuity and only the income or a specific percentage of the market value should be expended each year. An endowment can be named in honor or memory of a loved one and the designated to support general or specific uses.

Here are examples of endowments that have been established by Holston Conference churches and members:
  1. Annually provide Bibles to every third-grade Sunday school student or confirmation class in your church

  2. Annually provide Bibles to new members joining the church or to guests

  3. Establish or support a food pantry for those in need

  4. Sponsor a choir retreat, sheet music, choir robes, hymnals, special music, musical instruments, etc.

  5. Sponsor children to attend conference camps or upgrade camp facilities

  6. Provide seed money to launch or support a new community or global mission initiative

  7. Sponsor continuing education/retreats for pastor/staff through the Wesley Institute

  8. Provide support for drug and alcohol abuse programming and other teen initiatives

  9. Support an annual conference/program on family issues, health issues, senior citizen issues, women's issues, parenting issues, or men's issues.

  10. Give scholarships to Holston Conference colleges

  11. Give scholarships to seminary students who will return to the Holston Conference

  12. Contribute to new church development in Holston Conference

  13. Provide for maintenance and upgrade of church buildings, equipment, grounds

  14. Provide toys, supplies for a children's program or nursery

  15. Designate funds for special memorial garden, artwork, etc.

  16. Establish an endowment for upgrading or maintaining a parsonage

  17. Provide grants to worthy church-related or community charities

  18. Provide acquisitions and equipment for church library

  19. Support special programs for specific purposes like Asbury Place retirement communities, Holston Home for Children, Emerald Youth Foundation, Builders Club, Ministers Pension Fund Campaign, Change for Children, Youth Resurrection, Conference Disaster Relief Fund, Wesley Foundations, Wesley Community Centers, Project Crossroads, The Upper Room, etc.
  20. Establish an endowment supporting the “area of greatest need” to be determined by church endowment committee, Foundation board, Bishop, pastor, etc.

  21. Provide grants to local missions (such as Holston Conference Hispanic ministries)

  22. Provide grants to global missions (such as Hope for the Children of Africa)
