Camp staffs prepare for summer ministry
By Charles Maynard
The staffs of the four conference camps gathered last week and this week at Wesley Woods near Townsend, Tenn., to begin training for a summer of ministry to children and youth of Holston. More than 110 young people are staffing Camp Lookout, Camp Wesley Woods, Buffalo Mountain Camp, and Camp Dickenson. Many of the summer staff attend Hiwassee, Tennessee Wesleyan, and Emory & Henry colleges. Others participate in Wesley Foundations at several universities.
Training included CPR, first aid, games, storytelling, lifeguarding, and group singing. Bible study and worship were an important part of each day's schedule. At the request of the parents of several former campers now serving in Iraq, staff gathered before each meal to pray for peace.
"This year we have great summer staffs at all our camps," said the Rev. Randy Pasqua, director of Holston Conference Camp and Retreat Ministries. "We will be able to serve the children of Holston in a caring and careful way."
Training continues at each individual site in anticipation of the many children and youth who will attend summer camp. Some spaces are still available at each of the camps.
