TOP STORY: Emory & Henry elects new president

The Emory & Henry College Board of Trustees has unanimously elected Dr. Rosalind Reichard as the 20th president of the college.

Reichard currently serves as senior vice president and vice president for academic affairs at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., a position she has held since 2000. Prior to joining Meredith, Reichard served at Elon College. She will begin her leadership at Emory & Henry in August.

Summer mission project for kids: Due by Aug. 1

Children's groups participating in the summer hands-on mission project for Alaska are reminded that the due date is Aug. 1. Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, and other groups are invited to collect items such as microwave popcorn, clothing, and spiral notebooks for missions in Willow, Anvik, and Grayling, Alaska. Each district has a specific assignment.

"This is the first time that the conference has promoted a summertime mission project for kids only," says Anita Henderlight, Holston children's ministry coordinator. The project is related to the Annual Conference offering benefiting the work of missionary Fran Lynch.

Resurrection T-shirt contest: Deadline is July 24

Youth groups are invited to submit T-shirt designs for Resurrection 2007. Entries must make use of the Resurrection theme and should be original. Deadline for entries is July 24.

The burden of AIDS: How your church can help

How can United Methodist churches work together to lighten the burden of AIDS and HIV? A two-day conference in Washington, D.C., is designed to equip clergy and lay leaders to join in the global response to the AIDS crisis. Sponsored by the United Methodist Global AIDS Fund Committee, the conference will be held Sept. 8-9 at Doubletree Hotel. Registration costs $60; registration deadline is Aug. 15.

In Pakistan, tribal elders are losing influence and being increasingly threatened by extremists. In Nigeria, the pension system is undergoing a fundamental reform. And in the United States, rural life may have a positive affect on older people.

Defining marriage: Who said that?

"The Holston Conference passed a resolution 'affirming laws defending marriage.'"

— The United Methodist News Service, in a compilation report of actions taken in various annual conferences this summer. Holston was mentioned under the subhead of "Marriage and Homosexuality." Seven other annual conferences also took actions on the issue of defining marriage as the union between man and woman, according to the UMNS.
