TOP STORY: Evangelism nominations due April 15

Holston members are encouraged to nominate clergy, lay, and youth members for the Denman Evangelism Award, which is presented at Annual Conference in June.

In 2005, the award was presented to Kim Koesters, lay member at Vermont UMC, Kingsport District, and to the Rev. Larry Linkous, pastor at Greendale-Brumley Gap-Rich Valley UMC, Abingdon District.

Due by April 15, applications should be submitted to Anne Travis, director of connectional ministries.

Need money for your senior adult ministry?

The Holston Conference Foundation is now accepting applications for the Margaret Loving Grant for Older Adults.

Grant requests are expected from Holston Conference-associated churches and agencies for providing educational, recreational, and spiritual programming for older adults. Applications should include a brief summary of the project, the budgeted need, and other funding services. Seed money for new projects is encouraged. Matching funds and challenge grants are also encouraged. For more information, contact Rita Broderick by e-mail or toll-free at (866) 690-4080. Application deadline is April 30.

Women under 40: Explore social justice in NYC

United Methodist women ages 20-39 are invited to a Living Justice Seminar June 20-24 in New York, N.Y. The group size is limited to 20 with all participant expenses provided. The event is coordinated by the Deaconess Program Office through the support of the Women's Division and Mission Personnel Program area. Applications are due April 30. Should we be singing "Alleluia" during Lent?

Did you know that some denominations avoid the use of "Alleluia" in liturgy and music during Lent? This is sometimes referred to as "burying the Alleluia." For the United Methodist view on this issue, read this article on the General Board of Discipleship's "Worship" site.

'Healthy Churches' seminar: Thursday, April 6

Members who have not yet registered for the "Holston Churches Building Healthy Communities" seminar may register at the door. The event is scheduled for April 6 at Wesley Memorial UMC in Johnson City, Tenn. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The seminar concludes at 4 p.m. Cost is $10, including lunch and snacks.

Life in a fishbowl: Who said that?

"You're not really hired, and yet there is some expectation in most church settings that the pastor's wife comes along in the package deal."

— Becky Hunter, president of the Global Pastors Wives Network, commenting on how isolation can plague ministers' wives. Hunter was quoted in a recent Associated Press story concerning possible motives for the shooting death of Church of Christ Pastor Matthew Winkler in Selmer, Tenn. His wife, Mary Winkler, has been charged.
