Children: We still want your prayers of peace

The Sudan Action Team is compiling a prayer book of peace, written by the children of Holston and Africa. The book will be distributed in 2007. Many church groups have already submitted their prayers. If your children have not yet participated, they are invited to:

* write prayers of peace
* write their thoughts of peace
* draw a picture of what peace means to them

The child's name, age, and address should be placed on the back of each page. An adult contact's name and telephone number should be included with each group's submission. Submissions should be mailed by Dec. 15 (new date) to: Lori Sluder, Sudan Action Team, P.O. Box 32939, Knoxville, TN 37930-2939.

Should we observe Veterans Day in the church?

Veterans Day in 2006 falls on Saturday, Nov. 11. In most years and most times, Veterans' Day passes in our churches with little or no mention. Historically and traditionally, Veterans Day has been more a civic than a sacred observance. As with New Year’s Day, Mother's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and others, Veterans Day is not a part of the liturgical calendar — although sometimes local congregations will observe these days in some manner in Sunday congregational worship.

No more 'Indians': Who said that?

"McMurry's values are reflected less by what our athletic teams are called than by who we are and what we do."

— John Russell, president of United Methodist-related McMurry University, which has discontinued use of the athletic team name "the Indians." The university's board of trustees made the decision Oct. 13 in compliance with the National Collegiate Athletic Association's prohibition against the use of such names and related mascots by teams in post-season tournament competition.
