Districts go the 2nd mile for Africa
MARYVILLE, Tenn. Volunteers at Fairview United Methodist Church loaded up supplies donated by Holston congregations for a conference-wide missions project. Districts exceeded their goals for supplying kits for Africa this year, in some cases by 100 percent or more, conference leaders announced. Each district was assigned supplies for one of three countries: Liberia, Zimbabwe or Kenya. By June 8, the food, health, school and sewing supplies had been transported to Maryville, where they were packed into three trucks. After a stop-off in Lake Junaluska, N.C., the trucks headed to Newport News, Va., for overseas shipment. This year's mission kits were valued at $228,755, according to conference leaders. Knoxville District more than doubled its goal of 400 school kits for Liberia, supplying 953 instead. Tazewell District supplied 569 health kits for Zimbabwe, surpassing its 250 goal.
