Young adult mission trip:
Hot time in
South Carolina
You think it was hot here? Try working on a roof in coastal South Carolina on a sweltering day. That's what 11 workers did, among other things, Aug. 5-12 during Holston Conference's first mission trip for young adults.
The workers served in Edisto Island, S.C., through the United Methodist Relief Center. Three groups were represented: First Bluefield UMC, Tazewell District; First Sweetwater UMC, Maryville District; and the Wesley Foundation at University of Virginia College at Wise, Big Stone Gap District.
"The trip was in all cases successful," said Eric Glass, Holston's young adult ministry staff member. The Holston group picked up the work of previous mission groups, removing a chimney, finishing outside trim, installing bedroom shelves, installing siding, and covering a trench for new plumbing lines. The family will now have, for the first time, hot water and a bathtub, said Glass. They'll also have a new washer and dryer - a gift from First Bluefield UMC.
"Even though this family will never know everyone who worked on their house, it will give them a chance to see God in their everyday lives - every time they turn on the hot water or take a bath or wash their clothes - things we daily take for granted," said Glass.
