bishop's perspective:
Big Time Grace

We have all seen the bumper sticker, My child is an honor student at ________ High School. There is nothing inherently wrong with that statement, though I sometimes wonder if it feels like a putdown to all those kids who don't make the honor roll.

Well, recently I saw a bumper sticker with good theology. It read, I'm the proud parent of a kid dealing with his past behavior.

Wow! I say that is good theology because that's what God says about us. God takes pride in fallen and sinful creatures who attempt, by grace, to deal with past failures, mistakes and sins. God does not condemn us for our past behavior. God forgives that. God delights in what we are becoming.

When it comes to grace, none of us are on the honor roll. We just are not that good. God is so good. God is actually the proud parent of you and me who are dealing with our past – and yes, current behavior, which also falls short of God's ideal for us.

I pray I will embrace others like God does. I pray you will, too.
