A serious error is found in the Sept. 9 issue of The Call. An article on page 5 inaccurately states Hiwassee College is "battling to reestablish Hiwassee's lost accreditation" ["Tennessee Wesleyan's New Guy on Campus"].
Hiwassee College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). To say otherwise is wrong. Hiwassee also is approved by the University Senate of The United Methodist Church and the Tennessee State Department of Education. Neither approval would be possible without accreditation.
Hiwassee continues to pursue legal action against SACS to protect and preserve the college's 156-year church-related mission.
Many positive developments have not made it into the press. Among them: Hiwassee students excel on national achievement tests; annual fund giving exceeded its goal by 13 percent; the retention rate for first-to-second year students reached 73 percent, up from 56 percent last year; and total enrollment increased approximately 10 percent.
I encourage United Methodists to help set the record straight.
James A. Noseworthy
President
Hiwassee College
Madisonville, Tenn.
