Sweeping to the Music

BRISTOL, Va. – The main attraction was Lost and Found. But youth members from State Street United Methodist Church seemed to get into the act, too, at the Abingdon District's "Faith Explosion" on Sept. 7 (left). The concert, held on State Street's grounds, apparently inspired the church's own youth members to grab brooms and sweep in time to the music. ("We just thought it would be fun," said Hilary Faust, 17.) Meanwhile, participants from 37 other Holston congregations and five non-United Methodist churches seemed to divide their attention between the starring Christian rock duo from Ohio and the energetic bunch of broom-handlers on the hill.

Faith Explosion organizers estimated that the annual event was attended by 500 youth and counselors – most from Virginia churches, but some from as far away as Sneedville, Tenn. Youth members also attended from Lutheran, Church of Christ, Baptist, and Christian congregations.
