Workers wait for hurricane-relief call
Two Holston workers as well as the conference's disaster-relief trailer are on standby to assist with United Methodist Committee on Relief's hurricane aid along the East Coast.
Randy Hildebrant, church & community worker at Jubilee Project in Sneedville, Tenn., and the Rev. Harry Howe, church & community worker at Operation Crossroads in Marion, Va., are waiting for telephone calls that could send them to sites recently battered by Hurricane Isabel. The storm came ashore Sept. 18 in North Carolina and wreaked havoc along the East Coast. At least 36 people were killed, and President Bush declared North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia disaster areas.
Because of Hildebrant and Howe's carpentry skills and experience, it's likely they will be called in during the rebuilding phase, Hildebrant said during an Oct. 1 telephone interview.
Hildebrant said he recently requested use of Holston's disasterrelief trailer if dispatched to a hurricane site. Holston churches might also be requested to send trained volunteer carpenters and funding.
