Hiwassee appoints interim president
MADISONVILLE, Tenn. James H. Amburgey has been appointed interim president for Hiwassee College. The Rev. Al Bowles, chair of Hiwassee's board of trustees, announced Amburgey's appointment on Sept. 19, following a meeting of the board and the college's presidential search committee.
Amburgey has a long history with the college, having served as academic dean from 1955 to 1980 and college president from 1980 to 1984. Last summer, Amburgey volunteered "countless hours" during a campaign to help Hiwassee raise $523,000, officials said.
Amburgey's appointment was effective Oct. 1. The college's former president, W. Chuck Philip, resigned in March. After Philip left, Vice President Jim Murrell took over as interim president but reportedly resigned for a position at a school in Pulaski, Tenn.
