Ah, affirmation
Newspaper wins more awards

By Annette Bender

The Call receives more than its share of "affirmation" to use a favorite United Methodist word right here in the conference. So when the newspaper receives recognition from outside the conference, we are all humbled.

At the United Methodist Association of Communicators banquet Oct. 31 in Philadelphia, The Call received two new honors. The Annual Conference edition, produced daily at Lake Junaluska last June, received the "Best of Division" award for Special Publications. The newspapers regular edition received a "Certificate of Merit". These honors follow up last year's success, when The Call won the "Award of Excellence" above all United Methodist newspapers.

Design has much to do with this newspapers success, and for that, you can thank Dion Dykes. He works full-time as production manager at the Newport Plain Talk, then drives here every other Wednesday night to lay out these pages.

Last summer at Annual Conference, Eric Glass for the first time served as photographer for our on-site newspaper. His camerawork obviously caught the judges' attention, and were thrilled to have this special publication win an award in only its third year.

Circulation Manager Rita Broderick not only makes sure you receive your newspaper in the mail, she also compiles sections like "Reading List." Anne Travis, our director of connectional ministries, doesn't have enough hours in the day to do everything she needs to do, but she still finds time to help with proofreading.

My co-worker, Donna Hankins, gets the newspaper on-line and rescues me whenever my computer misbehaves. Gordon Ridenour, Bishop Ray Chamberlain, and other conference leaders provide the support and freedom to do our best work.

We love telling the stories of Holston Conference, and it sure is nice to know that somebody out there likes it.
