10 districts show increases in giving
By Annette Bender
Churches gave 6.6 percent more to Fair Share apportionments in November 2004 than they did in November 2003, leading to what may be the conference's highest percentage of apportionments paid in years, the finance office recently reported.
If Holston's 925 churches give a total of $1.9 million in December 2004, the conference will reach 92 percent of apportionments paid by the end of the year.
"That is very achievable, as $2.38 million was paid in December 2003," said Treasurer Clyde McDonald.
In the last several years, the conference has received 90 to 91 percent of apportionments - with the exception of 2002, when giving dropped to 88.5 percent.
The 2004 conference budget is $14.46 million, but all churches have not historically paid 100 percent of their apportionments.
Ten of 12 districts have shown increases in giving this year, McDonald reported. The Maryville District is leading the conference with 88.57 percent paid by the end of November. In the Knoxville and Chattanooga Districts, giving increased 7 percent and 6 percent, respectively, over last year's levels.
The Johnson City and Morristown Districts dropped slightly in 2004 giving, compared with 2003 giving.
The 2004 finanical books will close at 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 7. All 2004 transactions must be received in the conference treasurer's office in Knoxville by that deadline, McDonald said. For more information, call the finance office at (865) 690-4080.
