Spring event receives makeover
Transformation, Holston's annual spiritual weekend for people of all ages, is transforming.
For the first time, the Wesley Institute is co-sponsoring Transformation with the Board of Laity. The result is that the annual spring event features Bishop James Swanson as keynote speaker, and more church groups might be inspired to participate, Holston leaders say.
Held April 2-3 at Lake Junaluska, N.C., Transformation offers a weekend experience for the entire family, including age-specific programming, according to Conference Lay Leader Bob Lockaby.
"The youth component is especially focused, with Jason Roe preaching and special, youth-oriented music," Lockaby said. The Rev. Roe is associate pastor at Seymour United Methodist Church, Maryville District.
While Roe has led the youth segment of Transformation for several years, the appearance of Swanson as preacher for the adult sessions represents a departure from past Transformation programs. Swanson is expected to renew interest in the annual event, with his engaging preaching style and frequent question-and-answer sessions.
"The Bishop as keynote speaker is an important component that churches will not want to miss," said the Rev. Caryl Griffin, Wesley Institute director. "Bishop Swanson has an inspiring charge and message every church needs to hear and to which we all need to respond as disciples desiring to be faithful." Willie Kitchens, music and performing arts director at Chattanooga's Bethlehem Center, will serve as praise and worship leader. Transformation's theme is "Preaching and Bible Study based on Romans 12:1-8." In addition to youth programs, specialized programs for children will be offered through the weekend, as well as child care for infants and toddlers. The opening session begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, with gathering music followed by preaching by Swanson and Roe in their respective sessions. The weekend concludes at noon on April 3. Program registration fees are $30 for each adult, $50 for couples, $60 for families (including two adults and up to three children, $10 per each additional child). Youth-group rates are $10 for each youth member and $10 per chaperone. Accommodations are additional.
Registration deadline is March 24, but some late registrations will be accepted. Register online at http://transformation.holston.org or call the Wesley Institute at (865) 690-4080 for more information. Bishop Swanson has an inspiring charge
