Camps report high registration numbers

Days before the summer camping season kicked off, registration was 75 to 80 percent full and running ahead of the 2002 season, the conference's camping coordinator said recently.
By late May, a total 2,340 campers had signed up at Holston's four camps about 100 more registrations than this time last year, according to the Rev. Randy Pasqua. "We hope to serve more than 3,000 campers this summer."
The season began June 1 with camps opening at Buffalo Mountain in Jonesborough, Tenn., and Wesley Woods in Townsend, Tenn. Camp Dickenson in Fries, Va., started its season on June 2. Camp Lookout on Lookout Mountain, Ga., opens June 8.
More than 100 counselors, staff members and directors prepared for the season with training at Wesley Woods in May, Pasqua said. In addition to training required for certifi cation, participants were instructed in lifesaving and wilderness skills.
Staff members also attended a supervisory skills workshop led by Larry Martin of Asbury Place and a servant leadership workshop led by the Rev. Al Bowles, Chattanooga District superintendent, according to Pasqua. Other classes focused on song leading, games, folk dancing and storytelling.
This year's theme, "God Rocks!" is based on Psalm 62:2 and will be "focused on in many different ways," Pasqua said. Campers will build altars of rocks while remembering rock altars in the Bible. "We'll also be looking for times when God rocks us, stirs us up, in trying to build the faith of campers," said Pasqua. Vacancies still exist in many camps.
