Winner of T-shirt contest announced

Concord United Methodist Church beat out youth groups from 18 other churches to win the T-shirt design contest for Resurrection 2003.

The design, a stylized cross that will grace the chests of thousands of teen-agers attending Holston's annual rally in January, was the brainchild of Concord youth Craig Leach, according to youth director Jane Currin.

Concord picked Leach's art (pictured above) from four designs considered for the contest. The Conference Council on Youth Ministry selected the winning design.

Winners of the annual contest produce and sell T-shirts for a profit after tithing 10 percent of sales to the Youth Service Fund. After winning the contest in 2000, Concord youth made $20,000 total on Resurrection T-shirts.

The earnings were used toward an Alaskan mission trip. This year, Concord will use T-shirt earnings for Youth 2003 in Knoxville and a choir mission trip to New England next summer, Currin said.

Concord will accept advance orders for T-shirts by early November. Youth groups in Holston will soon receive order forms by mail or COMING SOON - download order forms at www.holstonyouth.com. Short-sleeve shirts ordered in advance cost $10 each; long-sleeve, $12.

Advance orders include the option of personalizing shirts with a church name for $1.25 extra. Advance orders are due by Dec. 1. Shirts also will be available onsite at Resurrection at $12 for short-sleeves, $15 for longsleeves.

To register for Resurrection 2003, held Jan. 17-19 and Jan. 24-26 in Gatlinburg, Tenn., go to www.holstonyouth.com. Registration ends Dec. 1, 2002.

Service Fund $8,000 short of goal

Conference leaders are appealing to youth groups to give to a service fund that benefits local and global ministries.

After years of placing in the top five United Methodist conferences in giving to the Youth Service Fund, Holston is currently $8,000 short of meeting its 2002 goal, according to youth coordinator Angee Woody. This year's goal is $33,000.

One-third of Youth Service Fund goes to the national United Methodist youth organization to support children's and youth ministries across the world. Another third goes to grants awarded by the Conference Council on Youth Ministries to ministries inside and outside Holston boundaries. Benefactors have included Jubilee Project and children of prisoners who received scholarships to a Holston camp.

A final third of the fund stays in Holston to fund events such as CRUSH, BLAST, and Youth in Missions Week.

Youth groups are encouraged to hold fundraisers or make contributions from their treasuries. Checks should be made to "Youth Service Fund" and mailed to: Holston Conference Office of Administrative Services, P.O. Box 2506, Johnson City, TN 37605. More information is available at www.holstonyouth.com.

Get on the bus for Chicago event

Youth registered for Exploration, a weekend of worship and workshops designed to help young people discern God's call, are invited to travel to Chicago with other Holston members on a chartered bus. Paid for by the conference, the bus trip is free of charge to Holston youth.

Registration for the biennial gathering, held Nov. 15-17 and sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry, is now closed. However, youth who have already registered may contact the youth office at (423) 928-2156 to sign up for transportation.
