Just wait until you see what we've got planned

By Annette Spence Bender

If you haven't heard, let me be the first to share the good news: The Call is a winner! In New Orleans at the United Methodist Association of Communicators banquet, The Call was recently awarded the 2002 Robert F. Storey Award for Excellence in Newspapers.

This means a lot to us, because the Storey Award is the highest honor for newspapers in the denomination. In addition, The Call won the "Best of Division" award for newspapers in 66 United Methodist conferences.

Yes, your newspaper placed above national United Methodist newspapers as well as conference newspapers with larger editorial staffs. We're grateful to you, our readers, for turning our pages.

Of course, The Call is a team effort. Kevin Slimp provides invaluable technical expertise. Dion Dykes Sr. makes our pages look beautiful. Rita Broderick manages our subscription base. And Bishop Ray Chamberlain and the Holston Conference provide ongoing support and resources for us to do our best work.

We're thrilled, and we hope you are, too. But it's like what Dion said when he first heard about the awards: "Just wait until they see what weÕve got planned!"

That's because our staff has been working on new ideas long before we heard about any awards, and we can't wait to share them with you. Beginning with the Jan. 17 issue, you'll see a new front page, new columns, a new look for "District Roundup," and a lot more.

While Dion has been working on a new design, I've been working with an advisory team to improve content. Donna Hankins, our interactive media specialist, is planning exclusive website content every Wednesday at www.holston.org. She's also planning an online "sneak preview" of the new Call.

We've got ideas about how to get information to you with style, truth, and speed. We're fired up, anxious to give you our best, and these awards are a vote of confidence that we might be getting it right.

So stay tuned, and watch what happens. Visit us regularly at www.holston.org, or subscribe to The Call by contacting thecall@holston.org or (865) 690-4080. We're honored to serve as your conference communicators in the ongoing quest to "by all means win some."
