Oak Ridge members rush to aid tornado victims
Following the devastation caused by tornadoes in Morgan County on Nov. 10, the Oak Ridge District office recently announced disaster relief efforts to aid local victims.
Immediate needs are for jugs of water; nonperishable, staple food items; personal hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, and soap; diapers; sleeping bags, pillows and blankets. Additional items include warm socks, gloves, hats, school supplies, over-the-counter medicines, and trash bags.

Groups and individuals may also make financial contributions to Oak Ridge District with "tornado response" on the memo line. "The money will be used to purchase building materials, with any remainder being used to purchase food and/or medical supplies," according to Oak Ridge District Superintendent Gordon Ridenour. Conference and district disaster- response teams were reportedly developing plans for shortterm need. Efforts are being made to involve the United Methodist Committee on Relief, Ridenour said.
According to news reports, the National Weather Service confirmed that at least 13 tornadoes swept across Tennessee between Nov. 9 and 10. The state's hardest hit area was Morgan County, where at least seven people were killed and 80 seriously injured. Statewide, more than 117 homes were destroyed and 1,200 damaged.
At press time, no Holston churches had reported any serious damage.
