TOP STORY: Observe World AIDS Day on Dec. 1

In June 1981, scientists in the United States reported the first evidence of a disease that would become known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or AIDS. Twenty-five years later, the AIDS epidemic has spread to every corner of the world. About 40 million people are today living with HIV and more than 25 million have died of AIDS, according to the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

World AIDS Day is traditionally observed Dec. 1. United Methodists are encouraged to observe this event on or near that day. The upcoming Dec. 1 issue of The Call will also explain how Holston Conference is addressing the pandemic.

No, you are not hungry: Who said that?

"The proposal to remove the word 'hunger' from our official reports is a huge disservice to the millions of Americans who struggle daily to feed themselves and their families."

— David Beckmann, president of Bread for the World, an anti-hunger advocacy group. According to the Washington Post, the USDA has determined that "very low food security" is a preferable term to "hunger," which is difficult to measure. An estimated 12 percent of Americans could not put food on the table last year, according to the report.
