Abingdon: Beech Grove UMC is located at the Virginia state line off Interstate 81, exit 1. Three or four times a day, says Pastor Emmit Wilson, a traveler will become confused by the change of exit numbers between Virginia and Tennessee - and will end up in the church parking lot, asking for directions. At first, parishioners joked about handing out maps, says Wilson. Later, the Vision Team decided to install a parking-lot informational box for lost motorists. The box contains fliers with "Directions to the Interstate" on front, "Directions to Heaven" on back. Also provided is an invitation to any United Methodist church, along with UMC Web site addresses.
