TOP STORY: Rosa Parks, remembered on Martin Luther King Day

Each year, United Methodist Bishop Woodie W. White writes a “birthday” letter to the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. about the progress of racial equality in the United States. Released by United Methodist News Service on Jan. 6, this year's letter memorializes Rosa Parks, who made history 50 years ago when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white man.

King's birthday will be observed on Monday, Jan. 16. Bishop White is now retired and serving as bishop-in-residence at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta.

Not Protestant and not welcome: Who said that?

"I was sad to be leaving my colleagues and students and an institution I valued very highly. But I support in principle the right of the institution to have exclusive hiring policies. Not every institution is a liberal democracy."

--Joshua Hochschild, former assistant professor of philosophy at Wheaton College, who was fired because he converted to Catholicism. Wheaton is an evangelical Protestant college in Chicago's suburbs.
