Call for nominees: Denman Evangelism Awards

The Denman Evangelism Awards provide focus on the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ. Awards are made each year at Annual Conference to one lay and one clergy person who are doing vital evangelism work in keeping with United Methodist history and tradition. Nomination forms are available from the conference office by e-mail, from district offices, and here. Nominations are due by April 15 to the Rev. Sandra Johnson, 829 Dallas Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405-2735.

Where do you go for scholarship information?

There is now a Web page offering relevant information for Holston Conference Foundation scholarships and merit scholarships. Visit http://scholarships.holston.org to learn more about available scholarships and print any required application forms.

Speaking of scholarships: Money for future ministers

The Jeanette Reynolds Scholarship is available to any student in Holston Conference considering a ministry career in the United Methodist Church. The scholarship is available not only to persons attending seminary, but also to undergraduates considering seminary. The application deadline is May 14. Applications are available by e-mailing Scott Gillenwaters or by visiting the First Oak Ridge UMC Web site . Click on "adult" and then click on "College Student Activities."

Change for Children grant applications due April 15

The children’s ministry office will be awarding Change for Children grants at Annual Conference in June. The deadline for applying for a children’s ministry grant is April 15. A promotional flyer, grant information and application are available in PDF format at www.holstonkids.com. Click on “Advocacy.”

‘Holy Land’ seminar offered March 11 in Knoxville

The Wesley Institute is offering a seminar, “Christians and the Holy Land: The Role of the Church in a Conflicted Land,” on Thursday, March 11, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at Cokesbury Center in Knoxville. Speakers include Michael Prior, senior research fellow and chair of the Holy Land Research Project, St. Mary’s College in London; and Peter Miano, executive director, Society for Biblical Studies. Numbers: Insight into the prison population

United Methodist congregations aren’t the only groups that are getting grayer. A recent report shows that the number of elderly inmates is rising fast. As of 2002, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 121,000 inmates age 50 and over were in state or federal prisons, more than twice as many as a decade earlier, according to the U.S. Justice Department.
