Walk the Appalachian Trail with other youth

Youth are invited to participate in "The Road to Damascus: Exploring Faith on the Appalachian Trail" on the weekend of Oct. 1-3. Brett Mitchell, director of the School of the Pilgrim in Chapel Hill, N.C., will lead a pilgrimage for 30 students beginning in Troutdale, Va., and concluding in Damascus, Va. Download a brochure and register by Sept. 17.

Youth workers: Need nourishment?

F.U.E.L. stands for "Fueling, Uplifting and Educating Leaders." The next FUEL event, "Sabbath," happens Oct. 22-24, when youth workers are invited to a weekend retreat with spiritual direction in Gatlinburg. FUEL is open to anyone who mentors youth in Jesus Christ -- paid or volunteer youth workers, Sunday school teachers, ministers or pastors. Download brochure & register by Sept. 22.

For parish nurses: Preparation course in Knoxville

The parish nurse is a registered professional nurse who serves through the church. A preparation course will be provided Oct. 4-8 at Tennessee Wesleyan College's Fort Sanders Nursing Department in Knoxville. For more information, contact Coordinator Alice Grady at (865) 777-5100.

Do come: Regional clergy conferences in October

Clergy are urged to attend one of two regional clergy conferences this fall. Under the theme, "Water Washed, Bread Fed, Spirit Led," the conferences will be held at State Street United Methodist Church in Bristol, Va., on Tuesday, October 19, and Cokesbury UMC in Knoxville, Tenn., on Thursday, Oct. 21. More information will be provided in a future issue of The Call.

Racism in SEJ elections: Who said that?

"As a black woman, I am really saddened by all this, and I have to reflect on whether this church in the 21st century is the church for me."

Sheila Flemming, Florida Conference lay woman, commenting on the recent Southeastern Jurisdictional bishop elections. Flemming's comments and others, charging racism, appear in Aug. 13 edition of The Call.
